Fly Girls on Tour: Kelechnekoff Studios, Peckham

Fly Girl Collective – Kelechnekoff Studios

Keen to mix up your workouts? In this new series, Fly Girl Collective rolls deep to classes, sessions and fitness studios in London to discover the best spots to check with your tribe. First stop: Kelechnekoff Studios in Peckham.

The spot…

Kelechnekoff Studios is a boutique fitness studio founded by actress and activist Kelechi Okafor to empower women through twerking, pole and self-defence classes. In other words, this is girl power for the new millennium – and a pretty fly way to get fit.

We tried…

Pole Dance for Beginners (£15), a 90-minute class that covers the basics pole dancing, such as how to perform spins and climbs. Once you master this class, you can move on to the intermediate sessions, where you’ll get the pleasure of learning from Ms. Okafor herself.

What we thought…

“The pole dancing session was not what I expected, but yes, it was a fun, full of laughs and slightly addictive. It also involved encouraging and helping others perfect their moves, which is very rare in group classes.” Ashanti

“Beginners pole was amazing! The mixture of theory, physics and fun made for a great session. (Teacher) Jenny was very patient and endearing which helped my nervousness! I’ll definitely go back for more classes.” Anita

“We had a great teacher, who took the time to help us individually. The ladies in the class were all supportive and encouraging, which really helped me feel comfortable to try out the moves.” June

“I’ve been wanting to try pole for a very long time and getting to try it with Fly Girl Collective at Kelechnekoff studios was the best possible way – I felt so safe and supported both by my fly girls and by the amazing Jenny” Angie

“I’ve always wanted to try pole dancing, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so challenging – in a good way of course! The class kicked off with a bit of core work (which is crucial for this sort of discipline), and it was nice to be in groups to practice different moves and see how we can improve our technique. My arms were still aching three days later mind you, but if you’re looking for an upper body workout that offers bucketloads of fun with friends, this is the class. And a shoutout to teacher Jenny – she was brilliant!”  Matilda
